Hoi An, Vietnam

The town of Hoi An is most often spoke of in the same sentence as cheap tailored clothes. Yes, you are able to get a custom fit suit or shoes for way less than you could ever dream off but this little city has so much more to offer.

I rode on the back of a motorbike from Hue to Hoi An crossing the Hai Van Pass. From the moment we turned off the A1 down a little street flanked by water towards Hoi An I began to fall in love. It might have had something to do with the fact that it was sunset and the colors reflecting off the water were mesmerizing. After a few wrong turns we finally found our hotel, The Sunflower which at $7 a night included the best buffet breakfast I have seen in Southeast Asia, and quickly showered so we could hit the streets for some dinner.

As we walked around this once sleepy fishing village I got further sucked into the magic of Vietnam. While yes this country can be harsh to travel in and still is rough around the edges every so often you stumble on a place that steals a part of your heart. It was here that I had the best street food in the whole country. This is where I discovered Ban Xiao  (Banh Xeo) which quickly became a foodie obsession of mine! We sat on some tiny plastic stools right on the water in front of the french colonial building and were fed a feast. This little Vietnamese women kept bringing use new dishes that we just devoured! Not to mention washed down with cheap beer. Oh what I would give to time travel back to that day.

Right outside of town there is also a great beach. It  is way less crowded than the neighboring Nha Trang and much more charming!  So I recommend getting fitted or a new set of digs on your first day in town. Tell the tailors you are in no rush and then spend the next few days falling in love with Hoi An.

Ahh, the good old Sunflower. Probably the best place to stay in central Vietnam. And you forgot to mention it’s fully air conditioned with an awesome pool. Apart from the street food the restaurants are also amazing. And cheap. One day I’m going back there to get me some custom made suits.

Hoi An was one of my favourite spots in Vietnam – I had some great pairs of shoes made to order. Miss the Banh Xeo too!
